Liuzhou China: IWSF World Cup, Wing places 3rd

Wakeboard
After a great start to her campaign in China, with a 1st in the Asian Cup, Amber was a tough competitor during the World Cup Stop the following weekend. After spending the week between contest sight seeing and taking in the Chinese way of life Amber was relaxed and ready to go! With the best woman's competitors in the world such as Dallas Friday (USA), Nicola Butler (SA) and Raimi Merritt (USA) the Chinese spectators were sure to be in for a show.

Like many contests around the world, conditions are not quite what the riders would prefer, though defiantly ads and extra element to the competition highlighting who the strongest riders are. As always Amber handled the rough water fairly well unfortunately falling on her highest scoring technical trick, the whirly, though still managed to ride away from a toe side off axis 540 and off axis 360. This placed Wing in 3rd place behind past world champion Dallas Friday who had some big raley tricks and technical inverts in her pass, and event Champion Raimi Merritt who impressed the judges with an S-bend.

The men's division showed some very familiar faces with tour veteran Philip Soven taking first. Second place wen to Australian Harley Clifford, whom has just taken claim to the US Pro tour title on his rookie year and Canada's Rusty Malinoski rounding out the podium places

JUMP
Jump water skiing was also apart of this World Cup stop, this discipline is known for exciting the crowd and the competitors did not disappoint. The two favourites coming into Liuzhou were Jaret Llwellyn (CAN) and World Champion Freddy Krueger (USA). Llewellyn did not qualify for the semifinals, taking a lot of pressure off the shoulders of Krueger. Russia's Igor Morozov set the pace from the start with a distance of 50.7m. Only Jason Seels (GBR) could beat this with 51.3m. Krueger was last out, knew what he had to do and got a standing ovation with a distance of 57.5m to take the Liuzhou City World Jump Cup title.

The Women's Jump event attracted athletes from five countries. Right from the start, Iryna Turets from Belarus set the pace in the semifinals with a jump distance of 37.0 m. Nobody could beat this. On entering the finals, she actually looked set to take the Liuzhou City World Cup Jump title. In the end it was a very close

battle between Turets, Denmark's June Fladborg and Natalia Berdnikova - also from Belarus. This time Berdnikova set the pace with a distance of 36.2 m. Fladborg had to settle for 35.6m - and the best Turets could do was 36.0m. Natalia Berdnikova took this World Cup title by a margin of just 0.2m

Ashley Hancock's Pink Ribbon Breaskfast

Earlier this year a friend of the Wing family, Debbie Hancock began an unsuccessful battle with breast cancer. Debbie was wife to Steve, and mother to Mat, Michael (Hank to friends and those in the wakeboarding community) and Ashley.

Ashley Hancock is holding a fund raising event on the 25th of October for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Her goal is to reach $2,500 and is already at $600 with only 8 individuals and businesses so far donating for her event, which is brilliant!

Please help keep this number growing with a personal donation or on behalf of your buisness.

Best wishes from all at Wing, we hope that you smash your goal!

Amber Wing, Asian Wakeboard Cup Champion!

Amber is currently in China after competing in the Asian Wakeboard Cup in the beautiful Fuyang, Zhejiang Province and is on her way to compete at the IWSF World Cup in Liuzhou.

After a headache beginning with her bags not leaving the USA where she began her journey, Amber was stuck without any of her own equipment. Being the true champion she is, Wing began competition using other competitors equipment which she was not familiar with. Luckily, in time for finals day Amber's fresh clothes and wakeboard arrived to her hotel.

As always Amber didnt let her stresses get in the way of her riding, competing strong throughout the semis and final to be crowned Women's Asian Wakeboard Cup Champion ahead of World Cup Stop Champion Chen Li Li and Japanses charger Miku Asai.

Amber Wing Takes Woman's Best Trick @ Wake Awards!

Continuing to push woman's wakeboarding has always been Amber's main focus, with her own individuality on and off the water she has been a great ambassador for the woman. Tonight at the Wake Awards held in Orlando, Florida Amber was honored with the 2009 woman's 'Best Trick' category for her heel side 720, up against stiff competition with Dallas Friday's S-bend. Winning this award has been something miss Wing has been working hard at for months now trying to land a second trick to secure two entries into this category. Unfortunately that didn't happen, though all she needed was the one 720 to seal the deal. No doubt Amber will be back at work soon, trying to land that second trick getting in early for the 2010 awards!

Huge congratulations Amber on such an amazing achievement!

Wayne Mawer World Champion, Eagle takes 3rd!

Congratulations to Wayne Mawer who has taken claim to the Formula 1 Men’s world title in the 16th World Water Ski Racing championships in Belgium behind ‘Tru Blu’, Mark Cranny at the wheel and Damien Matthews observing. Wayne now holds two ski race world titles as well as a wakeboard world title.

Unfortunately, Wing team member top F1 skier, Peter Procter took a fall in round one causing a severe injury to his rib. Peter was forced to stand down from the next rounds bringing a devastating end to his 2009 world title campaign.

Sydney to Newcastle record holder, Lauryn Eagle put in an amazing effort in the Formula 1 Women's event taking third to favourite Kim Lumley and Katelin Wendt

Oklahoma US Nationals Results

Congratulations to Amber who came 3rd in Opens Women at the US Nationals. Amber was the current two time national champion going into this event, unfortunately she was unable to hold onto her title for a third year in a row, though she did put up a fight. Amber has been riding extremely consistent which showed throughout her two passes getting a perfect krypt and large heel side 540 down, popping her tricks and landing them clean. She did however take a hard fall on the transfer box, though didn't let that shake her coming home strong knowing what she needed to do so that she could secure her place on the podium.

Dallas Friday and Nicola Butler were always going to be a threat for the title, Dallas surprised everybody by being the first girl to land an S-Bend in competition which is a trick that very few men can even perform. Nicola, the current Queen of Wake, wasn't fazed by Dallas showing her usual relaxed style throwing down a handle pass KGB and roll to blind along with her typical on and of axis spins.

1st. Dallas Friday
2nd Nicola Butler
3rd Amber Wing
4th Hayley Smith
5th Danni Petraitis
6th Raimi Merrit

This made an interesting change the Queen of Wake standings:

1. Dallas Friday - 280
2. Nicola Butler - 265
3. Amber Wing - 240
4. Raimi Merritt - 230
5. Hayley Smith - 187
6. Melissa Marquardt - 187

Paris Whittaker, our female ripper!

Paris Whittaker, one girl with a lot of determination and love for surfing, juggling school surfing as well as taking up wakeboarding Paris is one active grommet who you will be hearing a lot of in years to come. Luckily we managed to hold Paris down for long enough to ask her some questions about her passion.

Coming into winter are your surfing more or less than what you would in summer? Why?
I guess a little less than summer as the conditions are more variable and there is heaps less light available to get out there before and after school. Also I have been wakeboarding after school mid week as there are heaps less boats out at the moment.

What is the best part of surfing through winter?
Probably the fact that there are less people in the water. Also at this time of the year the winds are pretty good without the summer North Easter blowing the surf out.

Do you find it hard to get up early to go surfing?
No I love getting up early. That’s the best part of the day and I guess it why I love surfing so much. Its great watching the sun rise over the ocean in the morning.

What do you enjoy most about surfing?
I love everything about it. Getting refreshed in the morning is a great way to start the day. Also I’m learning new things every surf as I develop my technique. I also like getting out there with all the other regular surfers as they help me and encourage me to surf better and have loads of fun doing it.

Which surfer inspires you the most and why?
Female: Layne Beachley. She got this massive tube at a spot just near my house recently. I can’t wait to get my first real tube.
Male: My dad. He always takes me surfing and put lots of time into helping me. Sometimes he doesn’t get any good waves when we go surfing because he wants to help me.

If you had three wishes what would they be?
1. Travel around the world to surfing destinations
2. Be able to turn back time when the surf is good and I have to get out to go to school

3. Learn how to barefoot like Bronwyn

PLEASE SIGN PETITION

Hi Everyone,
I am currently assisting our club to have a petition signed to support Tournament Water Skiing and request that the Gold Coast City Council allow the Gold Coast Water Ski Club to retain full access to their training site.It is with concern that we learn that the Gold Coast City Council have imposed restrictions on the club’s access to their training lake, I need 7 day access to the lake for my preparation for the World Championships as well as being able to hold events and introduce new people to the sport
The Gold Coast Waterski Club and their members are respected within the national and international sporting community and are great ambassadors for the Gold Coast. We believe that upon investigation it will be found that they have no negative impact on the environment and that they have broad local community support.
Please visit this link to help support it, really appreciate your help. Your information is only used for the petition. Please forward this email to as many people that you can to help us support some of the top water skiers in Australia as well as the sport itself.

Touching Bases With Jarrod

Whats Up Everyone!

I finally made it over here to the States after a long couple days of non stop flying! I have been here for 2 weeks almost and loving it!

The last couple days I have been heading out to the projects with Robert Soven, Harley and Dallas Friday shredding the Sesitec 2.0 Cable System! Its been so much fun riding the cable and learning new air tricks! I have learnt a bunch of new stuff, s-bends, switch blind judge, s-bend t blind.
So i guess i am turning into a bit of a cable rat! Hahaha!

I have my next contest that Masters, in 2 weeks and then the first Tour stop just after.

Let you know how it all pans out! Happy shredding

Jarrod Askew

Amber Hits Up McCormick's Cable Park

Tampa Cable, kicker.jpg
This past weekend I was invited to McCormicks Waterski and Wakebaord Cable
Park in Tampa, to judge and compete in their first Cable Wakeboard
Competition. McCormicks is the latest cable park to open up in Florida and it lives up to the hype surrounding it, the huge turn out of competitors was proof of that.

The rails and kicker set up is spot on with a perfect incline rail
and nice long flat bar, a-frame and fun box and three kickers ranging from
small through large for all the boot you need. Unlike most cables systems around the world it operates clockwise, perfect for those left foot forward though seeing I am goofy it did take me a few laps to get use to!

Once the prizes were awarded there was a Freeride session held till 7pm, everyone was having a
great time riding and pushing each other to try new tricks. I rode so long that I had troubles getting out of bed the next day being so sore and burnt!

A big thanks to the staff at McCormicks who made the day run so smooth and were on call if
anyone needed anything. which defiantly kept everybody from judges to competitors happy.

Catching up with Gizie,May 6th

StGeorge Group Shot.jpgAfter the Barefoot Nationals in Mulwala, Gizie stayed on for a week to coach Courtney and Ashlea McDonald, members of the Australian Junior Barefoot Water Ski Squad. Gizie coached the girls before and after school and hung out with Pete O'Neil through the day. The McDonald girls both skied away from back to front 180 turns and have set their goals toward the 2010 World Champs in Germany.StGeorge 3 Up girls.jpg

Two weeks later Gizie had the pleasure of coaching Megan Roberts (also Wing team rider), Riley McKay and Georgia Groen on the Coomera River at Gizie’s home in Queensland. The girls were still on school holidays and spent five days training with Gizie. They achieved their goals for the week with Riley skiing out her back to front 180s, Georgia mastering her back deeps and slalom long line, not to mention both back toes holds on the boom. Megan was the biggest achiever for the week skiing out reverse front to back 180s and a toe front 180 feet to feet; an awesome ski performance from a 14 year old.

Although the barefoot competition calendar has come to a close for the season there is a Barefoot Marathon event in South Australia next month. So a change in training program is required for the next few weeks
